Kwekkeboom Patisserie has been around for more than 120 years!
The history of the five generations of the pastry-making family starts in Enschede when Lambertus Kwekkeboom was born in 1832. Lambertus is raising 3 sons in the pastry shop; Hendrik Jacob, Jan & Herman.
In their twenties, the sons exchange Enschede for the big city of Amsterdam.
The first Kwekkeboom pastry shops were opened at the end of the 19th century on Nes, Haarlemmerstraat, and Rapenburg.
in 1900 Herman Kwekkeboom takes over the business at Rapenburg 55 from his brother Hendrik Jacob. This is also the official start of Kwekkeboom Patisserie in the registers of the Chamber of Commerce.
Herman's son Herman was born in 1910. He literally took his first steps in the confectionery on Rapenburg. A few years later follows Neeltje, Herman's younger sister. For many years she helps her brother as a chef in the various shops. Everyone knows her as "Aunt Nel". Son Herman lives in a time where the developments around him are very fast. From the first refrigerator with a volume barely bigger than a crate of milk to the first electric ovens, cash registers, and other machines in the bakery that make the craft a little easier.
During the Second World War, there are hardly any raw materials available and little is baked, Herman deugt makes this need by repairing mechanical cash registers and scales in the bakery for other entrepreneurs in the city.
After the war, trade picks up again and Kwekkeboom moves into a building in Reguliersbreestraat. Customers were able to bake the tastiest biscuits with their own ingredients, so scarce were the stocks at that time.
In the following years, Kwekkeboom Patisserie continues to build up its name and fame in Amsterdam. There is plenty of production on all floors.
Herry Kwekkeboom is the fourth generation Kwekkeboom in the bakery world and started on the business in the 1970s. Under the leadership of Herry, the croquette grew up outside its own Patisserie all over Amsterdam, and later even all over the Netherlands. The Kwekkeboom croquette has been the model for high-quality snacks in the catering industry and outdoors. Millions of croquettes a year were made in a small warehouse in the Schapensteeg, next to the Reguliersbreestraat. The warehouse quickly became too small to handle the growth. This did not go unnoticed, in 1994 the Kwekkeboom croquette was sold.
After saying goodbye to the croquette, the Kwekkeboom confectioners once again fully focus on the trade. The old parent company in the Regiersbreestraat remained the main production location for our banquet products until the late 1990s. But the lack of space, the traffic pressure, and the cumbersome storage of raw materials was one of the reasons for moving production to Amsterdam North. The store itself was closed at this location in 2018, the strongly changed environment no longer suited the Patisserie.
Herry's four children can go to the business from the age of twelve on Saturday to learn the trade, the sons in the bakery, and the daughters in the store. Through various wanderings, the children are; Maarten, Caroline, Peter & Anouk all four work in the company, each with his / her own discipline. In recent years, the children have taken over the company and the original Kwekkeboom Kroket has been made in the Patisserie on a small scale. (exclusively for own shops)
What has not changed much in all those years are the honest products of Kwekkeboom, these are still old-fashioned and are often still made according to the recipe book of Grandpa Kwekkeboom. Fair raw materials such as real butter, flour, sugar, eggs, whipped cream, pure almond marzipan, almond paste, and fresh fruits are still used as a basis.
Our shop is located on the edge of the Buikslotermeerplein next to the Media Markt and the parking garage, and there are loading and unloading parking spaces in front of the shop.
